What is Mapa Societario?

Mapa Societario is an interactive visualization tool that maps the relationships between Spanish companies and their directors, administrators, and legal representatives. By searching for any company or officer, users can instantly see a network graph showing how entities are connected through shared directorships, appointments, and corporate roles.

The tool is designed for journalists, researchers, investors, legal professionals, and anyone interested in understanding the structure of Spanish corporate networks. It turns dense public registry data into an intuitive, explorable graph. The key objective is make this information available to everyone, without paywalls or registration, and to provide a powerful way to discover connections between companies and the people who run them.

Where does the data come from?

All data is sourced from the BORME (Boletín Oficial del Registro Mercantil), Spain's official commercial registry gazette published by the Agencia Estatal Boletín Oficial del Estado. The BORME publishes daily records of company incorporations, officer appointments and cessations, mergers, address changes, capital modifications, and other legally mandated corporate filings.

We parse every BORME daily publication, extract structured data about companies and their officers, and build a searchable graph database from the results. This means the data you see in Mapa Societario reflects the official public record of Spanish commercial activity. The data is kept in our server in a data center in Europe.

Source attribution: Mapa Societario is based on data from the Agencia Estatal Boletín Oficial del Estado, reused under its reuse conditions. We transform, extract, reorder, combine and analyze BOE/BORME publications to create a value-added search and graph service.

Independent service based on official sources

The underlying BOE/BORME publications are official sources. Mapa Societario is an independent service that transforms, structures and analyzes them; it is not the Registro Mercantil, does not issue certificates, is not affiliated with the Agencia Estatal Boletín Oficial del Estado, and is not endorsed or supervised by any public body. The information shown here is provided as is. It may contain errors, omissions, matching mistakes, parsing issues or delays because it is generated from public-source documents through automated processing.

For any legally, financially or commercially relevant matter, always verify the information in the official BORME edition and, where appropriate, request current certificates, annual accounts or other official documents directly from the relevant Registro Mercantil.

How does it work?

The process behind Mapa Societario involves several stages:

1. Data collection — BORME publications are retrieved daily from the official gazette. Each publication contains hundreds of individual corporate filings (known as actos) organized by province.
2. Parsing and extraction — We use custom parsers to extract structured information from each filing: company names, officer names, role types (administrator, sole director, board member, secretary, etc.), and the nature of the act (appointment, cessation, incorporation, etc.).
3. Identity resolution — A single company often appears under more than one name over its life (after a rename) or moves between registry sheets (hojas) when its registration is transferred. Rather than treating each as a separate record, we anchor every company to its hoja registral and reconcile renames and transfers, so a company's full history stays under one identity instead of fragmenting into duplicates. This step is where much of our effort on data accuracy goes.
4. Graph construction — Extracted entities are linked into a graph where companies and officers are nodes, and corporate roles form the edges connecting them. This allows traversal of the network: from a company to its directors, and from a director to all the companies they are associated with.
5. Search indexing — Company and officer names are indexed for fast autocomplete and fuzzy search, so you can find entities even with partial or approximate queries.
6. Visualization — The front-end renders the graph using a force-directed layout in real time, letting you expand nodes, explore connections, and navigate the network interactively.

What can you discover?

Mapa Societario helps answer questions like:

• Who are the directors and administrators of a given company?
• What other companies does a particular officer manage or direct?
• Are two seemingly unrelated companies connected through shared directors?
• How large is the corporate network around a specific person or entity?
• What roles (sole administrator, board member, secretary, etc.) does an officer hold?

This kind of analysis, sometimes called corporate network mapping or beneficial ownership research, is used in due diligence, investigative journalism, anti-corruption work, and academic research on corporate governance.

Coverage and limitations

The database covers companies and officers published in the BORME. This includes most Spanish limited companies (Sociedades Limitadas and Sociedades Anónimas) as well as other entity types that file with the commercial registry.

Important limitations to keep in mind:

• Data reflects what has been published in the BORME. There may be a delay between a corporate event and its appearance in the gazette.
• Parsing public gazette text is inherently imperfect. While our parsers are continuously improved, occasional errors in entity extraction or role classification may occur.
• Officer name matching across filings relies on string normalization. In rare cases, two different people with identical names may be conflated, or the same person may appear under slightly different name variants. Also, you have to be aware that while company names in Spain are unique, officers' names are not. We did our best to properly map the right officer to the exact company, but the lack of an officer identifier in the Spanish gazette and therefore keep this always in mind.
• The tool shows relationships extracted from public filings. It does not indicate current status — an officer shown as appointed may have since resigned through a filing we have not yet processed.

For authoritative, up-to-date corporate information, always consult the official BORME or the relevant provincial commercial registry directly.

Technology

Mapa Societario is built with React and uses a force-directed graph engine for real-time network visualization. The back-end API serves graph data and autocomplete suggestions from a purpose-built index of parsed BORME records. The entire front-end is open about its data sources, and the public API documentation is available on GitHub.
